Description

Water tower and water softener associated with Karoonda railway station. On the right is a tent of the type used by South Australian Railways track construction and maintenance workers. The Kennicott softener plant was necessary to remove salts from the water used in steam locomotive boilers, which would otherwise be rendered unserviceable.

The date may not be correct (could have been later) because the line through Karoonda was not opened until 1913. The rust stains on the concrete footings of the softening plant may indicate that a longer time has elapsed since it was erected.
