Deutsch: Kanizsai Dorottya Múzeum, May 2019.
English: Busō Carnival. One of the most important accessoires in the outfit of the Mohács Busōs is the carved wooden mask. It hides the identity of the owner and gives the Busō a frightening or funny appearance. Most of the older masks has rather human-like faces. Their colour was brownish or brown and purple, the eyes have no protruding edges, the lips do not stick out from the mouth part, their workmanship was much finer then that of the later masks, but most of them have no horns attached. In the second third of the 20th century, new times of masks emerged. Their characteristics already include the protruding borders around the curved eyes, with the inner edges often being rounded o or having a square form. The mouth is also more emphasized. The beard appeared on the buttom of the chin, and at the same times, horns began to be a common. From the middle of the century on, the art of mask-carving increasingly became a task for specialised craftsmen, whose workshops have distinctive features. An outstanding personality among the leading masters was Mátiás Kalkán, who also earned the title Master of Folk Art. |
