Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Sedimentation of Travertine. Muddy travertine drys and hardens, encrusting everything on the ground. The sediment precipitats chemically from “cold” (ambient temperature) water of karst springs, as opposed to “hot springs”, which originate from the earth’s crust. This type of Travertine is a phenomenon found in landscapes where karstified Muschelkalk or karstified Upper Jurassic prevail. The deposition in the photo is on the valley’s slope of river Glatt, a tributary of upper river Neckar), ca. 1000 m west of the village “Glatt”. The slope’s karst water emerges from an impounding layer in the Muschelkalk. A stretch of ca. 100 m of the slope is a soggy biotope (photo: Image:Karst-Quellflur_Naehe-Sulz-Neckar.jpg).
