Kaitaia, NZ 27 Oct 2005 Quest for Books We head into Kaitaia in search of coffee. We find a local place, but they are repairing the espresso machine with a pair of pliers... it takes a while but they succeed. While I'm waiting, I walkabout Kaitaia, looking for used books in the st. Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army, without a lot of luck. I get some cash - better luck than yesterday in Dargaville, where I was left stranded. I get back to the local "greasy spoon" and have a cappucino along with a plenty good date scone. Afterwards, we spy a used book store, it turns out to be surprisingly good. It's run by Alrina. I buy two very good books here: "Historical Atlas of New Zealand" 2003 edition, a bit used but a very good book for NZ$35 - a very large and heavy book which I drag around the entire country for the next 5 weeks... but it was worth it. Also bought a Manadal book by Arguelles for $16 and later a garden book for Mary Ellen. One reason to find books while here is that shipping books from NZ to US is very, very expensive. I had looked at this and concluded I would be much better off to buy while I am there in NZ. i102705 188 |
