Map showing the extent of Precambrian rocks in the Guiana Shield

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: The Guiana Shield is a geological shield (an area where very old rocks lie on the Earth's surface) in northeastern South America. The Guiana Shield is part of the Amazon Craton. It is formed by Proterozoic rocks and is between 2.5 and 1.9 billion years old.

The Guiana Shield forms the subsoil of the Guiana Highlands. On these higher parts there are table mountains (called tepuis), such as the Roraima table mountain (2875 meters) and waterfalls, such as the Angel Waterfall in the Venezuelan Canaima National Park.

The Guiana Shield extends over the territory of Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, parts of Colombia, Venezuela up to the Orinoco and northern Brazil up to the Amazon.

The most important rivers are the Orinoco and the Rio Negro, an important tributary of the Amazon.
