Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Coat of arms of Edmund Basset, as blazoned along with the arms of his brother, John Basset (K-105), in the Caerlaverock Poem (K-106: "li frere Basset")

"Dont li ainsnez portoit ensi
De ermine au chief rouge endenté
De trois molettes de or enté
Li autres de cokilles trois."
Arms: Ermine, on a chief indented gules three escallops or.

The identity of the Basset brothers is a mystery. Nicholas Harris Nicolas stated: "Barren as many of the memoirs of the Knights who were at the siege of Carlaverock are, not only of interest, but of facts of any kind, the attempt to collect particulars of their lives has never proved more fruitless than with respect to the brothers Basset. We may conclude, from the Roll of Arms which has been so useful in identifying many of the individuals who have been noticed in these memoirs, that their names were Sir Edmund Basset and Sir John Basset, and that they were knights of the county of Gloucester.". (See: Nicholas Harris Nicolas, The siege of Carlaverock in the XXVIII Edward I. A.D. MCCC; with the arms of the earls, barons, and knights, who were present on the occasion; with a translation, a history of the castle, and memoirs of the personages commemorated by the poet, pp.363-4, "THE BROTHERS BASSET"[1] p.83, Text in Roll[2]) No relationship has been identified with the Basset family of Drayton Basset, or the Basset family of Tehidy in Cornwall and of Umberleigh in Devon.
