Summary

[edit]
Description

Junkers Ju88R-1 night fighter at the RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, 8 July 2020. The Ju88 was undoubtedly the most outstanding multi-role combat aircraft of the Axis powers. Although designed as a bomber, its high speed and surprisingly good manoeuvrability despite its considerable size, together with its ability to carry a heavy armament, made it highly suitable as a zerstorer – heavy fighter. And when RAF Bomber Command began sending its heavy bomber raids over Germany the Ju88’s large internal fuel capacity made it an ideal night fighter because of its long endurance and ‘loiter time’.

The Cosford Ju88R-1 has FuG 220 Lichtenstein BC radar with a Matratzen (Mattress) aerial array on the nose. The aircraft is in a RLM65/70/71 camouflage scheme i.e. RLM65 Light Blue undersurfaces and RLM70 Black Green & RLM71 Deep Green upper surfaces.

This particular aircraft was flown by a crew defecting to Britain and landed at Dyce, Scotland in May 1943. Two of the crew had held the third member at gunpoint during the flight. It is now thought that these two were in fact British clandestine agents and that they flew the aircraft to Britain so that scientists could examine its highly secret radar equipment. As a result, the scientists developed ‘Window’ - the simple idea of strips of tin foil of a specific size - which ruined the effectiveness of the radar when dropped by RAF bombers on a raid (the idea behind chaff). A secondary benefit of the ‘defection’ was that it enabled the RAF to fully assess the considerable abilities of the Ju88 as a fighting aircraft.
