Description |
The inscription date is highly dubious. Exner attended Eckersberg's private summer session with a model in 1844 and exhibited this work in 1845. There is another view of the model by him, sold by Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen in 2000 (See "other versions"). Why the painting has been dated 1842 is very odd. It was not exhibited at Charlottenborg, Copenhagen in 1842 as stated, but in 1845. In 1842 Exner did not exhibit paintings but got a silver medal for a drawing. The present painting was very probably awarded a silver medal in 1845, as stated in the Charlottenborg catalogue. kunstbib.dk. Besides, it makes little sense for the experts at Sotheby's to write that an 1842 painting should be inspired by a work by Eckersberg from 1844. |
