Summary
[edit]DescriptionJulian Russell Story--Aesop's Fables--1884.jpg |
English: Julian Russell Story (1857-1919), Aesop's Fables, 1884 private collection. After seeing the painting at the Grosvenor Gallery summer show of 1884, Henry James wrote to a correspondent: "Julian Story has a very clever & big Subject—Aesop telling fables…He has a real talent but an uninteresting one, and carries even further (with less ability) Sargent’s danger—that of seeing the ugliness of things." (The Complete Letters of Henry James: Volume 2, University of Nebraska Press, 2019, p. 137 and note p. 140.) |
