Issu d’un milieu aisé, érudit, grand amateur d’art, plus philanthrope que collectionneur, Jules Maciet fait don des œuvres qu ’il achète pour l’éducation artistique de tous. Le vaste champ de ses recherches s’étend du Moyen Âge au XIXe siècle. En trente ans, il donne au musée des Arts décoratifs 2404 œuvres. Hanté par la propagation de l’art, il accomplit un travail documentaire considérable : découpant des centaines et des centaines de volumes pour en extraire toutes les images et les classer par séries méthodiques, constituant ainsi les fameux albums « Maciet », aujourd’hui encore véritable mine d’informations pour tout public. Grâce aux achats de ce voyageur infatigable, le musée des Arts décoratifs possède entre autres, une collection de sculptures étrangères, un ensemble de céramiques islamiques, des tapis dit de « Lotto » et de magnifiques tapisseries aux « mille fleurs » du XVIe siècle. extrait du site du musée des arts décoratifs
