We have thus far considered the wild bird during the period of young. Forphotographing inaccessible nests, and for approaching birds in free life when thesway of parental instinct is over, one must resort to other methods. For fullerdetails the reader is referred to the volume from which the preceding paragraphshave been largely drawn. The method of the study and photography of birdswhich is here illustrated has been used, as the case of each required, with overforty nests of the common land birds of New England, and its value has beenfully demonstrated. It is for those who have had the same difficulty as myself in mastering thetechnic of dried and heated preparations of blood for clinical examination thatthese remarks are intended. While I will not say that I have not sometimessucceeded in getting beautiful preparations by the ordinary method of drying andheating the cover-glass smears and staining with the Biondi-Ehrlich triacid stain,I may say that to make a perfect slide in this way has been the exception, andI have often had to try over and over again before accomplishing creditableresults. This I will not say is the fault of the method, but I imagine frompatient work that all are not able to acquire the requisite skill to make infalliblya good mounting. My own
