Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Joseph Harvey House, 605 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Built in 1897 and a contributing property to the NRHP-listed Elmwood East Historic District, the Colonial Revival style is exemplified on the Harvey House by the fanlight and sidelights that frame the front entrance, the Classically-inspired decorative motif (especially the Ionic columns on the balustraded porch), and a low-pitched hip roof, and deviated from by the asymmetry of the façade on the ground-floor level and the round arched crowning the twin dormer windows. Joseph Harvey, its original resident, owned Harvey's Laundry on Chenango Street but only lived there for a year; it appears that he moved in 1898 to a suite in the Hotel Markeen and died soon thereafter. Subsequent residents include George D. Morgan, president of the agricultural machinery manufacturing firm of D. S. Morgan & Co., who moved into the place in 1901 and stayed until 1905, as well as businessman Hubert F. Bingham (1868-1959), whose 12-year tenure at the address ended in 1918.
