Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The John and Mathilda Schenk House, 73 Northampton Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Dating to 1894, the Schenk House, along with the others on its block, were among the last in the neighborhood to be built; the south side of Northampton Street between Ellicott and Michigan had earlier been the site of Michael Schneider's planing mill and lumber yard (owned by William English in its last years). The architecture was originally a unique mix of Queen Anne and Tudor Revival styling, though most elements of the latter (namely half-timbered stucco façades on the front gables) was removed in a late-20th century renovation. The hipped roof, slightly bowed bay on the left side of the façade, and spacious front porch (with posts framed by unusual rounded brackets) continue to attest to the former. Canadian-born John C. Schenk (1855-1932) was a brewer by trade; at the time the house was built, he had just taken over ownership of the East Buffalo Brewing Company from the Luippold family, who had founded it on Emslie Street some years prior. Schenk and his wife Mathilda (1857-1948) both lived in the house until their respective deaths, and son John Henry Schenk (1898-1961) continued to retain ownership of the property for about two additional years thereafter.
