Summary
[edit]DescriptionJohn Knox's House, High Street - geograph.org.uk - 1338281.jpg |
English: John Knox's House, High Street The building with the forestair on the right is traditionally believed to have been the house of the Scottish Church Reformer, John Knox, while minister at St. Giles High Kirk from 1560 to 1569 - although this is not supported by firm historical evidence. It is, however, contemporary and one of the best surviving examples of Scottish pre-Reformation domestic architecture. Like much of the High Street, it suffered partial destruction at the time of Hertford's invasion in 1544, but was rebuilt. Scheduled for demolition in 1849, it was saved by the efforts of the pioneer conservationist, Henry, Lord Cockburn. Note the communal street well from which water was drawn by High Street residents. 1339934 |
