Summary
[edit]DescriptionJohn J Audubon (36968817373).jpg | Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron is adjacent to one of the most treacherous stretches of water within the Great Lakes. Unpredictable weather, murky fog banks, sudden gales, and rocky shoals have earned the area the name "Shipwreck Alley." Today, the sanctuary protects more than 100 known shipwrecks, including the wreck of John J. Audubon, pictured here. This wooden two-masted schooner sank in 1854 in 170 feet of water after a collision with the schooner Defiance. (Photo: Doug Kesling/NOAA) |
