Description

This photo was taken on Cedar Mountain in eastern Alameda County. I have no idea of what plant produces seed heads like this. Indeed, i'm not even sure of the correct orientation for this photo. I think it looks attractive this way.

7/4/2014 10 PM PST—Thanks to the members of the Plant Idents Group on Facebook I am now fairly certain that the seeds are those of Tragopogon porrifolius—purple salsify. I base my species identification on the location of where the plant was photographed. There are herbarium records from near that location. Records for other species were collected no closer than 40 miles from Cedar Mountain.

It is not a California native but it is not considered an invasive species.
