Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Originally built out of wood in 1806 by Juan Joaneda, a Minorcan fish farmer, during the Second Spanish Period, this house was subsequently rebuilt with Coquina stone walls. Shortly thereafter, the house was sold to Juan Gonzáles Montes de Oca, whom then sold the house in 1809 to Juan Joaneda’s son-in-law. The house was modified for commercial usage in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, first as a tailor shop, and then as a gift shop. In 1972, the house was purchased by Elizabeth Towers, a local philanthropist, and was subsequently donated to the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, with restoration of the house to it’s early 19th Century appearance being carried out during 1976-77. The house was restored as part of an effort to restore the colonial appearance of the city by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, which reconstructed several other houses and structures from the colonial period during the 1960s and 1970s.
