Object history | "Fait partie d'un ensemble de 94 portraits d'académiciens commencé en 1685 à l'initiative de l'abbé de Dangeau, alors directeur. Collection de l'Académie française. Saisie révolutionnaire le 24 juillet 1794. Passé au musée des Monuments français. Remis au bibliothécaire de l'Institut le 12 septembre 1803. Donné par l'Institut à Louis-Philippe pour les Galeries historiques de Versailles en 1839. 1850 : aile du Nord, attique, salle 141 dite "des Académiciens". 1855 et 1861 : aile du Midi, attique, salle 152. Mentionné en réserve, 10 février 1967. Dépôt à Paris, Institut de France, Académie française, le 28 avril 1989." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Commentaire "Né à Hyères, Jean-Baptiste Massillon reçoit sa formation chez les Oratoriens et entre dans leur congrégation en 1681. Ordonné prêtre en 1691, il est nommé supérieur du séminaire de Saint-Magloire à Paris. Sa réputation d’orateur sacré l’amène à prêcher à Versailles en 1699, 1701 et 1704. Son oraison funèbre la plus célèbre reste celle deLouis XIV : « Dieu seul est grand, mes Frères… », prononcée le 17 décembre 1715 à la Sainte-Chapelle lors du service funèbre organisé par la Chambre des comptes. Nommé évêque de Clermont en 1717, il prêche le petit carême de 1718 devant le jeune Louis XV. La date de 1719, qui figure sur son portrait, correspond à celle de son électionà l’Académie française." |
