Notes | uniform jacket, Major, NZ Engineers, 1931-34 worn by Major WA Gray, MC Post-war jacket with WW1 medal ribbons and badge WW1 service as 25-995 2nd Lieut. William Arthur Gray, 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade awarded Military Cross (LG 25 November 1916, p11550) "For conspicuous gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his company with great courage and determination, capturing the position and reorganising his line. He set a splendid example to his men." William Arthur Gray a Civil Engineer of Auckland, enlisted with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and embarked from New Zealand on 15 February 1916 as a lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion A Company, destined for Suez, but was on the Western Front when awarded the Military Cross in late 1916. During his service he was taken prisoner and spent time in a German prisoner of war camp and was not finally released until 1919. Gray initially convalesced with relatives in Somerset although his injuries left him with limited use of his left arm and residual health problems. Before returning to New Zealand Arthur Gray married Ellen, a cousin from Somerset. He was commissioned as adjutant 1916 and his final rank was captain Following his return to New Zealand in 1919 Arthur Gray purchased the existing engineering practise of Ashley J Hunter. He again joined the military serving with the New Zealand Engineers from 1931 to 1934. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
