Summary
[edit]DescriptionJOSIAH DAY HOUSE 09.jpg |
English: Josiah Day House is located at 70 Park Street in West Springfield Massachusetts. It is the oldest building in this town, and likely the oldest brick salt-box house in the US. The main, brick, part of the house was built in 1754 and the addition was added in 1812 for Josiah's son Aaron and his wife and their children. Their son Aaron II and his family continued to occupy the house until 1897, when Lydia, the last daughter, passed away. The house, according to some, served as a headquarters for one of the leaders of Shays' Rebellion in 1786-1787, Luke Day, a second cousin of Aaron Day. Luke trained soldiers on the common in front of the house and, as tradition holds, planned the attack on the Springfield Arsenal there. The house was sold to the Ramapogue Historical Society in 1903 and is now a museum, housing some of the Day family's furnishings and other belongings. It can be toured by appointment. |
