| Description | Alnus rhombifolia—White alder. The common alder in California, it grows from Montana west to British Columbia and Montana and south to near the Mexican border. The author of the Flora of North America treatment believes in may be found in Baja California, as well. The species grows near open stream banks and adjacent slopes. It is also found in Mojave and Coloradan deser oases. The long catkins are the staminate catkins. They will open fully in winter. The small catkins may be pistillate, although it is difficult to tell at this stage of their development. The tree that provided the sprig photographed grows at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. |
