ars; and the school of art founded here by Squar-cione in the first half of the 15th cent, exhibits a peculiar doctrinaire character.Squarcione, though not a professional artist, made a valuable collection ofworks of art during his travels, and employed young artists to make draw-ings from these models. The greatest Paduan master was Andrea Man-legna (p. 222), and the school materially influenced that of Venice. Theaustere style peculiar to the Paduan pictures is perhaps due to the doc-trinaire training of the artists and to the severe, Albrecht-Diirer-like char-acter of Mantegna. A distinguishing characteristic of the school is itspredilection for richness of decoration, for which Squarciones collectiondoubtless supplied abundant models. From the Main Railway Station (PI.
