Description Hagia Sophia has a many mosaics from several centuries, when it was one of the principal Christian churches in the world. The Comnenus mosaics date from 1122. This one depicts the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, with the Byzantine Emperor John II Comnenus (reigned 1118-1143) and Empress Irene.
