Issoudun (Indre). La Tour Blanche. Edifice qui se situe au carrefour des architectures Plantagenêt et Philippienne. Des restant de murs au pied de la tour font penser que celle-ci était chemisée (entourée par une enceinte). Philippe-Auguste s'était emparé d'Issoudun en 1187, mais en 1195, Mercadier, un mercenaire à la solde de Richard Coeur-de-Lion, reprend la ville. En 1196, le traité de Gaillon accorde Issoudun à Richard. D'après la tradition, la construction de la Tour Blanche aurait débuté à la demande de Richard Cœur-de-Lion, entre 1196 et 1200. En 1200, suite au traité du Goulet, le successeur de Richard, Jean Sans Terre, doit rendre Issoudun à Philippe-Auguste. C'est Philippe-Auguste qui fera terminer la construction de la tour, vers 1202. Pour sceller la paix entre la France et l'Angleterre, Aliénor d'Aquitaine sortira, en 1204, de l'Abbaye de Fontevrault où elle s'était retirée, pour aller chercher en Castille sa petite fille, Blanche, pour la marier au prince Louis, fils de Philippe -Auguste. Aliénor, qui a été mariée au roi d'Angleterre Henri II, était également la mère de Richard Coeur-de-Lion et de Jeans-Sans-Terre. On mariera Blanche de Castille, avec le Prince Louis, fils de Philippe Auguste et future Louis VIII. Blanche de Castille, aurait reçut Issoudun en dot au moment même où s'achevait la construction de la tour, celle-ci aurait donc été baptisée "la Tour Blanche". Cependant, l'historien Romain Guignard fait remarquer que " cette appellation de tour Blanche apparaît surtout dans l'usage moderne. On ne la remarque pas dans les anciens textes où il n'est question que de la "tour d'Issoudun". La Tour Blanche pourrait tout simplement devoir son nom à la blancheur du calcaire des carrières d'Ambrault, utilisé pour la construction.
