Notes
English: In 1598, Isabella Clara Eugenia, the daughter of the Spanish King Philip II, married Archduke Albert, the future Governor of the Spanish Netherlands.

The Flemish portraitist Pourbus the Younger painted full-length marriage portraits of the ruling couple (Isabella Eugenia with Her Dwarf, 1599, Royal Collection, London), which were later repeated in the bust format on several occasions.

Isabella wears a luxurious fur-lined brocade wedding dress with embroidery of personal significance: lilies refer to Isabella’s maternal descent from the Valois dynasty, and intertwined rings indicate marriage.
