This poster advertises the Royal Centennial celebrations reaching Invercargill on the 12th of December 1939. While the poster is advertising relatively restrained celebrations compared to the ‘jewel in the centennial crown’ of the extravagant and wildly popular Wellington Centennial Exhibition, there were also a number of memorials and events around the country “consolidating the image of national unity and collective achievement.” Additionally, it is a particularly interesting image when taken in the larger context of the time. The New Zealand Royal Centennial was celebrated around New Zealand from 8 November 1939 to 4 May 1940. It was a celebration of the nation’s coming of age; however “Maori history and the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi took a backseat to the celebration of a century of European effort and progress in New Zealand”. Only months before war had broken out in Europe, and while there was strong debate around postponing the exhibition it was decided it was important to keep up the morale of the nation. Taking this into account the choice of the rather striking lion symbol, traditionally a symbol of both England and royalty, on the forefront of this poster seems noteworthy. As NZ History have observed “although the centennial was conceived as a way of reinforcing New Zealand nationalism, it is striking how large a part Britain, the ‘mother country’, played with thin national definition.” This dynamic poster is one of a number of beautiful artworks Archives New Zealand holds as a part of the Railway Posters series 25056 which covers the period 1889-1968.
