could it be a famous bee: Giant Honey bee - Apis dorsata? The creature was really huge.

There are more bees reported to reside in Sundarbans: "three species of honeybees: Apis dorsata, Apis cerena and Apis florea. Honey and wax collection only utilises Apis dorsata. " www.apimondia.com/congresses/2001/Papers/335.pdf
