Description

In the latter parts of the 19th century the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs established Indian Schools, in hopes of "taming" the "savage" Native Americans by teaching them English, white American culture, and Christianity.

  • Many Native American children were taken away from their families and tribes against their will, and were educated in the ways that would destroy as much of their native traditions as possible (changing hairstyles and clothing to those of white Americans, speaking English only, and so forth).
  • In 1924, Native Americans were given United States citizenship, and since then many Native American cultures and tribes have received official recognized status from the United States Government. Additionally, while Indian Schools still exist today, their current role is instead to preserve what is left of the Native American cultures.


  • An entire section of Heard Museum is dedicated to the shameful legacy of Indian Schools and their effect on Native Americans. Phoenix's Heard Museum is a great overview of the dozens of diverse cultures of Native Americans that are found throughout the State of Arizona.
