all 25 386 INDIA AND MALAYSIA. Christians, and nearly all the licentiates are of the samefaith. The Christians are largely in the majority in Lahore,Bombay, and Calcutta. Some of these, when they go out,will be independent practitioners; some will work in themissions, but the majority will be employed by the DuiferinAssociation—all will be so employed who receive scholarshipsfrom that fund. It will thus be seen that the Dufferin As-sociation, secular as it is supposed to be, and supportedlargely by the money of Hindus and Mohammedans, mustdepend upon Christian women for its success. This givesan opportunity to show the capacity and trustworthiness ofwomen to those who have not only doubted, but deridedtheir claims to such virtues; it gives Christian womanhooda prominence which otherwise could not have been attainedfor years, and is one of the most active forces in bringingthe whole Christian community to the front among the manyclasses, castes, and countries of the Empire of India.
