Description
English: On January 24, 2018, NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over India, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard to acquire a true-color image of a winter day across the country. Haze hangs over the entire country, from the Gulf of Kutch, northwest of the Kathiawar Peninsula to the Bay of Bengal in the east. Haze is one of the largest health risks in India, according to a report released on January 11 by the Health Effects Institute (HEI). This report also provides the first comprehensive analysis of the levels of fine particulate matter air pollution PM 2.5 by source at state level and their impact on health. Household burning and coal combustion were found to be the single largest sources of air pollution-related health impacts. Agricultural burning, anthropogenic dust, transport, other diesel and brick kilns also contribute significantly to the country’s air pollution issues.
