Description

Incense guessing-game from Japan, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

The box is of an undetermined wood, painted with black lacquer and sprinkled with gold and silver dust, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Game pieces are made of wood, painted with black lacquer and sprinkled with silver dust, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl; mother-of-pearl; porcelain; mica; silk; paper; and copper alloy. It was made in Japan between 1615 and 1868.

This game was a present commonly given to newlywed wives. Small pieces of incense would be heated on the mica plates, and their aroma smelled. Players would then lay down the appropriate marker containing the name or aroma of the incense. The game-master would then write down correct answers using the writing set.

The box depicts deer in autumn. The blue bowls, which would contain smouldering incense, were decorated with images of foreigners.
