Summary
[edit]DescriptionIn Memory of the Hyde Park Railings, 1866.jpg |
English: On the 23rd July 1866, the Reform League organised a non-violent demonstration against the failure of the recent Reform Bill. Spencer Walpole, the Home Secretary, told police not to let protestors into the park. There were three days of skirmishes before one of the protestors realised the railings were not secure. The railings fell and 200,000 people flooded into Hyde Park. This print is a satirical take on the protest and shows a funeral being held for the railings, along with a hearse and mourning policemen.
The Reform League campaigned for manhood suffrage and political reform. The Reform Act was passed in 1867 and extended the vote to more working class men. PHM has many objects on display relating to the 1867 Reform Act in Main Gallery One. |
