Description

Image showing French visitors examining the statues or moai whilst the islanders steal items of clothing. Europeans did not understand Rapanui customs when trading items and interpreted the Rapanui behaviour as theft. From 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du Monde' (1797). Copyright of The University of Manchester.

On 5th April 1722 a Dutch fleet arrived off Rapa Nui. This happened to be Easter Day so the Dutch captain, Jacob Roggeveen, called it Paasche Eiland or 'Easter Island'. This was the first of four visits made by Europeans during the 18th century: the Spanish in 1770, the British inder Captain Cook in 1774, and the French under La Perouse in 1786. None of the visits lasted very long.

The islanders were friendly, and traded food and favours for items of clothing and other goods. All the European accounts focus on the statues but only a few were still standing when the French arrived in 1786. None of the visitors appear to have explored the island as far as the quarry at Rano Raraku where the statues were carved. Some writers commented on the lack of trees on the island and could have moved the statues without the use of wooden timbers.
