Text Appearing Before Image: Fig. Tlie guitar fish Rhinobatus productus. Adult male. The guitar fish is not much expanded and disk-like, being sharplyMedge-shaped in front and tapering into a thick tail behind. Twodorsal fins and a caudal fin are well developed. The body is coveredwith shagreen and there are rows of hooked spines along the middleline of the back and tail, and a small bunch at the shoulder. The youngfish has small spines around the inner border of the e^e and along therostral ridges. The color is uniform dull brow^nish on the upper surfaceand white on the lower. This fisli is found from San Francisco to San Diego and southward.South of Point Conccpcion it is very common. It reaches a length of3 or 4 feet.

The front margins of the disk are nndnhiting and together forman angle less than a right angle. The snout is prominent bnt blunt atthe tip. The front of the first dorsal tin is only a little behind the hindedge of the ventral tins. The upper surface of the body is covered withclose-set prickles of difterent sizes, rather than shagreen as in the nextspecies. There is a row of enlarged spines along the middle of the backand the tail, and 2 short rows on each shoulder of 2 or 3 spines each.There are no spines on the sides of the tail. The color is grayishbrown with indications of clouded crossbars. There is a large blackblotch on the lower surface of the pectoral at its hind end.
