Text Appearing After Image: The Sculptukkd Fiuure of the Fallen Foe at Tak-i Bostan A GROUP OF FOUR FIGURES 219 A fourth figure completes the group. It is that of a prostratewarrior who is trampled beneath the feet of the two victoriouskings, the one of whom to the right tramples upon his head, theother upon his feet. The head of the fallen foeman rests limplyupon the left arm in a manner intended, apparently, to portraydeath. The helmet, which differs from the others, is decoratedby a band that seems to be jewelled and is set off by largebosses, which might be thought to be pearls in a massive setting,but are more probably the studding of the iron-nailed crown ofthe Parthian kings.^ The face is bearded, although the whiskersare not curly like the others. In the case of this figure alsoiconoclasts have perpetrated their vandalistic work. The entiretrunk of the body has been shattered to such a degree that muchof the effect of the sculpture is lost; but the remains of thesword, although much damaged, can be trace
