La sierra de Urbasa es una meseta kárstica de gran belleza. Sus laderas abruptas y parte de su altiplano están cubiertos por densos hayedos. El interior de esta montaña está horadado de innumerables simas y galerías. El clima es muy húmedo y gran parte de las precipitaciones son en forma de nieve. El agua es filtrada prácticamente en su totalidad hacia el subsuelo y después brota en surgencias por sus laderas dando lugar al nacimiento de varios ríos.
