Description

O Convento de São João de Tarouca, localizado na encosta da Serra de Leomil, no distrito de Viseu, ergue-se num grande vale, ao fundo do qual corre o rio Varosa. Inicialmente foi um ermitério mas, em 1152, após a vitória de D. Afonso Henriques sobre os mouros em Trancoso, foi lançada a primeira pedra da igreja conventual cisterciense. O mosteiro foi o primeiro a ser construído no país pela Ordem de Cister. O dormitório novo e torre sineira foram construídos no século XVI. A última fase das obras de ampliação do mosteiro decorreu no século XIX.
