Não existe a menor dúvida de que a primeira fundação carmelita em terras portuguesas se realizou em Moura, no ano de 1250. Menos certa, é contudo a responsabilidade da fundação do Convento do Carmo, que muitos historiadores atribuem ao infante D. Afonso de La Cerda (fundador de mais dois conventos, um em Gibraleon e outro em Requena).Desde a sua fundação, este convento beneficiou de numerosos privilégios reais e era tal a devoção dos habitantes da Vila e arredores que, já no séc. XVI, temos bens de famílias importantes a serem doados ao convento, por vontade testamentária. De referir a título de exemplo a doação efectuada por Afonso Gonçález, cónego de Badajoz, em 1428, de todos os bens que o mesmo tinha em Moura (com obrigações de missas e sufrágios). Este espaço é merecedor de uma visita atenta, não só pela história que lhe é intrínseca, como pela interessante componente arquitectónica que ostenta. Inicialmente construído no chamado gótico alentejano, este templo imponente com as suas três naves de seis tramos, sofreu várias alterações manuelinas e renascentistas na sua traça. De destacar, a bonita abóbada artesonada manuelina da sacristia, em cujas intersecções está a cruz de cristo representada, o magnífico púlpito em muito semelhante ao da Igreja de S. João, e, um pouco por todo o Convento, a presença da simbologia da ordem de Malta, nomeadamente na entrada para o refeitório, e no muro de ingresso ao templo.
