Description

A igreja de Santa Maria, durante séculos, construída ainda antes da fundação de Portugal no ponto mais alto do monte onde se avista Espanha , foi referida no foral de D. Sancho II .É"(...) uma igreja com uma fachada do românico mais primitivo, onde no interior, os estilos se misturam ao longo dos séculos(...)" . Desta destaca-se uma grande escadaria, que curiosamente corre de norte para sul, dando entrada , com um arco de volta perfeita a um edifício a céu aberto e um arco ogival a separar a capela-mor do corpo da Igreja. O pavimento é repleto de sepulturas com inscrições quase ilegíveis Notam-se as constantes restaurações que foram feitas nesta Igreja, na porta de entrada. Consta que nesta Igreja esteve uma estátua de Nossa Srªdas Dores "sentada, de mãos entrelaçadas e olhos para o céu ". Tinha também uma capela lateral, com um brasão ostentado em cima do arco.
