Description

A Igreja Matriz é também conhecida como Igreja de S. João Baptista. Foi reformulada entre 1717 e 1738 sob o traço do engenheiro vianense, Manuel Pinto Villalobos, que lhe deu uma ampla espacialidade barroca. Apre­senta uma planta longitudinal, de nave única, com seis capelas colaterais demarcadas, mandadas construir pelas principais famílias do concelho. A fachada é rematada por um relevo representando o Baptismo de Cristo, obra do século XVII que deve ter pertencido ao edifício anterior. Destaca-se, no seu interior, a riqueza retabular e decoração. A talha do altar-mor é barroca, inserindo-se no estilo nacional e a capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores é rococó, sendo revestida a azulejos policromos. Hoje, este templo, classificado como Monumento Nacional, é lugar de culto e ocasionalmente, palco de alguns concertos de música clássica e orquestral.
