Templo de uma só nave é uma das maiores igrejas portuguesas do seu estilo. Nas suas paredes com mais de dois metros de espessura, assenta uma abóbada lisa, e no frontal do altar-mor, um riquíssimo painel de azulejos do séc. XVII, com a pintura do Divino Salvador do Mundo, num imponente de madeira na capela-mor encontra-se a imagem do Padroeiro da Paróquia, Santíssimo Salvador. Existem ainda duas capelas laterais, uma dedicada a Santa Luzia e outra a Santa Bárbara, cuja devoção de sente nesta vila por parte das gentes mineiras, de qual a santa é a padroeira. Encontra-se ainda na Sacristia um magnífico lavabo do séc. XVII. Os documentos mais antigos que a seu respeito conseguimos encontrar, datam de 1478, sendo então a apresentação de Prior, Pe. João Annes Mouta. Na visitação de 1482, consta que foi então visitada pelos fidalgos e cavaleiros da Ordem Militar de Sant’lago, Gil Vaz da Cunha, Duarte Furtado de Almeida e o Escudeiro Álvaro Dias. Ao tempo era o Comendador da Vila Fernão de Mascarenhas, fidalgo da casa real e Tabelião de Aljustrel, Nicolau Afonso Na visitação de 1510, realizada por D. Jorge, filho de D. João II e Duque de Coimbra, mestre da Ordem de Santiago, ficou exarado que esta igreja foi fundada por Fernão de Mascarenhas, comendador que foi de Aljustrel, pelos reinados de D. Duarte e D.
