Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Clouds surrounded Iceland on April 23, 2022, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this gorgeous false-color image of the island nation. Clouds are thickest over the North Atlantic Ocean, to the west and south of Iceland and thin over the Greenland Sea (north) and the Norwegian Sea (east). Parts of the western and southeastern coast also wear a cover of cloud, primarily in the form of low cloud (fog) that appears to fill the valleys. Most of the sky over the mainland, however, remain clear, allowing a spectacular look at a spring day in Iceland. This false-color image uses visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared (MODIS bands 7,2,1) to distinguish snow and ice from cloud. In this band combination, snow and ice will appear bright electric blue while cloud typically remains white. However, small ice crystals carried in high-level clouds will give that type of cloud a light blue tint, as seen in the high, cold cloud in this image. Vegetation appears vivid green while water appears inky-blue or black.
