Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Two officers can be seen looking at slabs of ice which appear to be at least four to six inches (ten to twelve centimetres) thick. According to the original caption, the ice, which seems to have formed over a puddle in a shell or mine crater, had been broken up by shell-fire.

Winter conditions were difficult, as described by Haig in 1917, '... the roads, disintegrated by the frost, broke up, the sides of trenches fell in, and the area across which our troops had fought their way forward returned to a condition of slough and quagmire.'
[Original reads: 'Ice broken up by shell fire.']
