Summary

[edit]
Description
English: By late November 2018 the breakup of Antarctic sea ice was well underway in the lengthening daylight and warming temperatures of springtime. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s acquired a true-color image of Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a section of such as scene on November 23. This image shows a stark contrast from the same area in late October of this year.

The solid white area at the upper edge of this image is land covered with snow and ice. Black lines have been overlain on the image to delineate the edge of the continent. “Fast ice” clings to the land edges and while “pack ice” floats on the open ocean, unanchored to land. Open ocean water appears black.

According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Antarctica’s annual maximum sea ice extent of 18.15 million square kilometers (7.01 million square miles) was reached on October 2, the fourth lowest maximum in the satellite record.
