Afrikaans: 'n Zoeloe-melkemmer (iThunga) by die Zoeloe-historiese museum by Mthonjaneni, noordelike KwaZoeloe-Natal. Dit word tipies uit 'n enkele stuk wildevy- of maroelahout gekerf, is sowat 38 cm hoog en 15 tot 18 cm breed. Dit is dikwels versier met geometriese patrone en het dikwels handvatsels. 'n Koei word hierin gemelk en die vars melk (uBisi) word dan hieruit in 'n kalbas- (iGula) of leerhouer geskink om in dikmelk te verander, die sg. maas of amasi. Sonder om dit ooit skoon te maak, word vars melk daagliks bygevoeg. Kyk ook Umlazi. Die Zoeloe-biersif (iVovo) in hierdie emmer is onverwant.
English: A Zulu milk pail (iThunga) at the Zulu Historical Museum at Mthonjaneni, northern KwaZulu-Natal. The narrow elongated vessel is carved from one piece of wild fig (umGonswane) or marula (umGanu) wood to milk into. They are about 38 cm in height and 15 to 18 cm wide, at the widest point, and bear carved patterns, and wooden projections to serve as handles. The fresh milk (uBisi) is poured into a calabash container (iGula) or leather pouch or gourd wherein it is left to turn sour. Without ever cleaning it out, fresh milk is added daily, to turn into amasi. See also Umlazi. The Zulu beer strainer (iVovo) placed in this pail is unrelated. |
