Title
IOW-4A1226 Roman Belt Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy belt buckle (c. AD 200-c. 350).

The buckle is roughly 'D'-shaped in plan, flat at the front and back. It has a 'kidney bean' aperture at the outer end and a sub-rectangular aperture at the opposite end. The bar, rectangular in cross-section, is slightly narrowed and the pin is missing. The upper part of the frame (but not the bar) is decorated with a low relief continuous zigzag pattern. In each angle created by the zigzags there is a small pellet. The rear face is plain.
This buckle has a corroded mid-green patina overall.
22.1 x 21.1 x 2.0mm. Weight: 4.01g.

Similar buckles have been published (Appels and Laycock 2007: 100-106).
