I am now visiting my favorite hangout in Seoul: Lotte World, located in Jamsil. Although I am in Jamsil all the time whenever I am in Seoul (and it even used to be my home neighborhood back in the day), this is the first time I am driving its streets in a car of my own. Driving up here from Cheonan involved some colossal traffic jams on Expressway 1, but at least I had a chance to listen to some radio shows. Some involved memories of 1980s Hong Kong pop culture, complete with some songs by Andy Lau and Leslie Cheung, which was appropriate as my own trip to Hong Kong was just over a week away. I was actually developing my own list of favorite Seoul-area radio stations, in fact! (FM 102.7 MHz, "The Eagle" run by the US military, was NOT one of them - not very useful for a civilian - though occasional plays of Mariah Carey and Colbie Caillat helped a bit.) A few weeks earlier, I also had done a writing exercise to support my novel-in-progress, which took the form of me interviewing my novel protagonist. My novel protagonist is a United Airlines flight attendant, and in the exercise, I would pick her up at her hotel during her Seoul layover and bring her over here for a dinner. I was thinking I was going to be driving a silver Hyundai Sonata as a rental - and sure enough, that's what I am indeed driving! |
