he hip- and knee-joints were greatly relaxed. Under treatment, which consisted in breaking down adhesions underan anaesthetic, retention of the limbs, at first bysplints, in a natural position, massage, and passivemovements, she recovered in three months. According to Weir-Mitchell the reflexes may dis-appear in old-standing cases of this kind, and themuscles show diminished response to the faradic, and after years even to the galvanic, currents. The muscles harden, and ^ about the joints andbetween the tendons a similar but far greaterleathern-like hardening is found. The spasmmay not relax even under ether or chloroform, and is not affected by sleep. He considers the brawn-like hardness of the muscles peculiarto this form of multiple contractures, and alsostates that changes in the joints occur, afteryears of contraction, which may be incapable ofcure. The knee-joints are most apt to be affected. Lastly, in the milder forms of hysterical con-tracture, and in those which affect one joint

Special forms are contractions of the musclesof mastication, causing trismus ; of those of theneck, causing torticollis; of the muscles of thespine, producing deviation to one side or ky-phosis ; spasm of one side of the tongue; andblepharospasm.^ Hemispasm of the face and tongue is im-portant because of its frequent association withhemiplegia. The naso - labial furrow on theaffected side is deepened, the angle of the mouthdrawn to that side, the eyebrow lowered, whilstthere are generally tremors of the muscles. Inattempts at movement these features are exag-gerated. Th
