AILS. You may have noticed when you have cutor broken the skin on your finger that the cutsometimes heals quickly. Sometimes though, ittakes long to heal, becoming red and sore andfestering. This is because some of the invisiblegerms in the air have got into the wound andhave started to grow. In their growth, theydestroy some of the tender Mesh, and make thecut hot and painful. Then the doctor has towash the wound out with great care, and coverit afterwards, and try to prevent any moregrowth of these, invisible plants. The doctor, in fact, does exactly the samething as a careful gardener does when a treegets its bark cut or broken. The gardener haslearned that a tree often begins to rot whenpart of its bark or wood has been removed. Sohe covers the cut with paint. This preventsthe invisible genus from alighting upon thewound and beginning to grow on the moist CARE OF THE SKIN AND NAILS. 55 wood. It is now well known that decay in atree nearly always begins where microbes startto grow.

In order to prevent the decay fromspreading, some packers of apples and orangesare careful to wrap up each one in paper. From what has been said about the skin andabout trees and fruits, you learn that the firstthing to be done in the case of cuts or woundsof the skin, is to see that they are washed cleanwith soap and well-boiled water. They shouldthen be covered with a clean cotton or linencloth to prevent disease germs from getting intothe wound and perhaps into the blood, andthus causing blood-poisoning. For the same reason, pimples or boils shouldnever be pricked with a pin or opened with acommon pen
