| Description |
English: Built in 1953 and expanded with a smaller addition in 1967 and a massive addition to the rear in 1983, this Modern International-style building was constructed to serve as the library for Western Carolina College now Western Carolina University. The building was named for Hiram Tyram Hunter, president of Western Carolina Teachers College from 1923 until 1947, whom died in Weaverville while still serving in his leadership role. The building features a red brick exterior with the original front section being four stories tall with a one-story addition to the side and a two-story addition on the front, constructed in 1967 as additions to the original building. To the rear, a long and low two-story addition, built in 1983, features high ceilings, ribbon windows, large interior spaces, and long exterior walkways, and extends into the former site of Memorial Stadium. The building remains in use as the home of the main library of Western Carolina University, as well as being the home of the Mountain Heritage Center, a museum focused on regional history. |
